First Major Bead | God the Father
After beginning with Mary at the pendant, the Seven Spirits Prayer Beads turn immediately to God the Father. The movement is deliberate. At the threshold we remembered the creaturely “yes” through which the Word took flesh; now, on the first major bead, our attention turns from creation to its Creator.
This establishes an orientation that will govern everything that follows. Contemporary Sophianism honours Sophia and the other created spirits of Wisdom, but worship belongs to God alone. The wisdom we seek does not originate in Sophia or in ourselves. Its source is God. The Codex preserves this distinction explicitly: the Sophiaic Intelligences may be received as gifts and contemplated as spirits of Wisdom, but they are not the origin from which Wisdom comes.
James gives us an especially fitting image:
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.
— James 1:17
The chapel artwork takes that image as its starting point. We do not attempt to portray the Father as a human figure. Instead, the architecture opens upward. Light descends through an oculus whose source remains beyond our view, filling the sanctuary and touching the stone below.
The image is symbolic, not a depiction of God Himself. What we see is not the Father, but light received within creation. Even the faint colours appearing on the floor belong to what happens when that light encounters the created world. The source remains one; what receives it becomes luminous in many ways.
This distinction will matter increasingly as we move toward the Seven Spirits. The colours, names, images, and relationships of the Sophianic tradition are ways of contemplating Wisdom within creation. They do not divide God or place created spirits alongside Him as competing sources. We begin here so that everything which follows remains ordered toward Him.
And yet the first major bead is not only about distance, transcendence, or doctrinal boundaries. The SSPB also invites intimacy. Jesus speaks of the Father not as an abstraction but within the eternal communion of Father and Son, and He invites His disciples into the knowledge of the Father through Him. The Contemporary Sophianic path therefore begins its major beads not merely with an idea about God, but with an invitation to love Him.
Prayer
Father Almighty, source of every good and perfect gift, we give You thanks. Before anything was made, You are. All that is created receives its life from You, and every true wisdom finds its beginning and its end in You.
Teach us to seek Wisdom without confusing the gift with the Giver. Let everything we encounter in this devotion deepen our love for You and our love for our neighbour. Where we do not understand, give us humility; where we see clearly, give us gratitude; and in all things keep our hearts turned toward You.
Draw us into the love revealed in Your Son, Jesus Christ, and prepare us to follow Him more closely.
